On the morning of August 22, 2023, the kickoff meeting and the first working session for the building materials industry standard "Water-Based Epoxy-Modified Cement Flooring" were held in Lankao, Henan Province—a region renowned for its lush greenery and serene beauty. More than 30 experts from China National Inspection Testing Holding Group Co., Ltd., representatives from the China Building Materials Federation, as well as industry organization and enterprise delegates, attended the event.

  PART 01

The third batch of industry new standard project plans for 2022, released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, shows that the industry standard "Waterborne Epoxy-Modified Cement Flooring" has successfully received approval for establishment, with project approval number 2022-1307T-JC. According to reports, this industry standard is being organized and developed by China National Inspection Testing Holding Group Co., Ltd., making it a key focus and foundational general-purpose standard revision project under the Standardization Engineering (Action) initiative. The nature category of the standard is a recommended product standard.

  I. "Water-Based Epoxy-Modified Cement Flooring"

The industry standard for "Water-Based Epoxy-Modified Cement Flooring" ranks as the 155th item on the project schedule.

Water-based epoxy-modified cement (ECC) has emerged as a leading example of the recent development direction in the field of architectural flooring. Using water as its dispersing medium, ECC boasts extremely low VOC content, making it an environmentally friendly and green building material with Class A fire resistance. The widespread adoption of ECC in architectural flooring stems from its unique characteristics: it offers excellent mechanical strength and toughness, effectively addressing the common issue of poor flexibility and susceptibility to cracking found in conventional cement-based self-leveling materials. Additionally, ECC exhibits high bonding strength and minimal shrinkage, ensuring robust adhesion to substrates. It also features outstanding moisture-barrier properties for the substrate, allowing construction even on damp surfaces—thus preventing defects like blistering and cracking—and significantly reducing project timelines. Typically, ECC consists of three key components: water-based epoxy resin, a curing agent, and cement, with the ability to adjust its workability by adding适量 water directly at the job site.

  II. Value and Meaning

The development of the industry standard "Waterborne Epoxy-Modified Cement Flooring" will fill the domestic gap in standards for such products. This initiative will not only help standardize the technical specifications and testing methods for waterborne epoxy-modified cement flooring but also provide valuable guidance for engineering applications in design and construction companies. The inclusion of a single-component formulation in the draft industry standard clearly demonstrates the technical foresight of the expert members on the drafting committee. By establishing this standard, we can drive technological advancements, lead industry growth, and ultimately position Chinese standards on the global stage—empowering China’s innovative building materials sector to gain greater influence and leadership in international market competition.
